London Gatwick Airport is operated by Gatwick Airport Ltd. Gatwick was formerly owned by BAA and then by Ivy Bidco Limited (Ivy), a company formed to undertake the acquisition of Gatwick. Ivy was ultimately controlled by funds managed by Global Infrastructure Management, LLC, part of Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP). In Apr-2019, VINCI Airports purchased 50.01% of the shares and became the majority shareholder to operate Gatwick. Gatwick is the second busiest airport in the London area and in the UK after London Heathrow and is oriented more towards low cost and charter carriers than its larger competitor.
Gatwick is the busiest single runway airport in the world for aircraft movements. There are plans to bring a taxiway into service as a Northern Runway for short haul take-offs, by 2030.
